A Doctor’s Stories: Behind Closed Doors
Every hospital has doors that stay closed to the outside world. Behind them are moments of pain, laughter, fear, and sometimes miracles. Dr. John F. McGeehan spent decades in those rooms. He listened, he cared, and he learned. Now, through his stories, he opens those doors for us, showing what it truly means to be a doctor and, more importantly, to be human.
ABOUT THE AUTHOR
John F. McGeehan, MD
John F. McGeehan, MD, built his career on the simple belief that medicine begins with listening. Trained at the University of Pennsylvania and seasoned through years as a primary care doctor, he cared for families across generations. Later, he became an associate dean, helping to create medical schools and guiding students through the challenges of becoming physicians. He also chaired ethics committees, where families turned to him in their hardest hours. His own near-fatal illness changed how he saw life. It gave him a deeper sense of gratitude and a clearer understanding of what patients feel when they lose control. Beyond his work, he is a husband, father, and grandfather who treasures the gift of time. His memoir, A Doctor’s Stories: Behind Closed Doors, is his way of honoring the patients and families who shaped him as much as he shaped them.
ABOUT THE BOOK
a doctor's stories
A Doctor’s Stories: Behind Closed Doors is a memoir of real encounters, not abstract medicine. Dr. McGeehan shares the lives that touched his own—a man living with gangrene who chose dignity over surgery, a wife caring for her husband through Alzheimer’s, students discovering what compassion really looks like, and even his own fight with a sudden illness that almost took his mind. These stories carry honesty, humor, and moments of quiet strength. They remind us that medicine is not only science—it is a bond between people. It is the courage to sit with pain, the grace to laugh when it feels impossible, and the humility to learn from every life.
